Hello everyone, pleased to meet you!
My name is Lucy, and I'll also be one of the moderators here. I'm from Wales and I work at a University there, teaching about digital cultures. I did my PhD in online fandom, and I'm the co-chair of the Fan Studies Network.
I absolutely love reading, film and television. Woody Allen and Michael Haneke are my favourite directors, while the TV programmes I've enjoyed the most are In Treatment and The Wire.
I love MSCSI and I really look forward to discussing it with you all!

So I haven't been on a forum in years - is it OK if I say hi from here? I iz too skeered to start my own thread.
I'm a public library librarian in the UK! I love comics but haven't been following much beyond online strip comics so this is a great chance to start following one again.
I am happy to be labelled geeky or nerdy. I love SF and fantasy, in books, TV and film. Pet authors du jour : David Weber, Lois McMaster Bujold and PC Hodgell. I also love Pratchett, Charlaine Harris. TV atm: Battlestar Galactica, Being Human UK, Last Leg, Doctor Who. Film: er Hunger Games...looking forward to Star Trek!

Erm well to be a librarian you have to do a library qualification. Depending on your country if you find out who the official body of librarians is (ALA in America, CILIP in the UK) they will probably have a list of officially recognised qualifications. Here in the UK you can do a post degree MA in library studies or a diploma. You'll need experience of working in a library (normally minimum of 6 months). This can be paid posts like 'Graduate Trainee librarian' roles or just library assistant work in a library.
To be a library WORKER, ie paraprofessional usually you need just GCSEs/A-Levels/Baccalaureate/ ermmm High School exams? (Don't know the American words - exams or tests taken at 16 or 18 yrs).
However if you wanna work in a public library as a UK librarian beware, jobs exist but they are heavily cut back due to govt cuts. There are tons of other sectors though like libraries in Law firms or large companies or large charities or in Hospitals, schools etc...sorry that may be more info than you wanted. But thanx for your positivity. Librarians do indeed rule.

yeah, I applied a few times to be a library assistant during my degree, but I got turned down. I think the career I'm aiming at is one where I can simply spend as much time as humanly possible getting curious, satiating that curiosity and sharing what I learnt whilst doing so. Not found it yet, like. I used to hang around with the librarian at my high school, and she was something of a role model for me. It's put a rosy sheen on the job title that will probably never live up to my expectations, but it's always been something I've had my eye on. Thank you for the warm overabundance of useful knowledge at the merest request. You are a very good librarian
