It struck me this morning that even on this board, where we're celebrating a superhero comic with a female PhD student as its main character, I feel the need to apologise for posting about my thesis or my research. It goes to show just how ingrained it is in our society that women shouldn't talk about their intelligence, shouldn't say anything that might make them look better than other people. So I thought a reminder of why we need Cat might be a good idea.
We need Cat because I shouldn't be afraid to talk about my research and how much I enjoy it.

That's really true, Bethan! We should not feel the need to apologise about that at all.
I think too that we need cat to show that women are not the one dimensional beings in tight fitting clothes that have been evident in some comics!!

We need Cat because some women grow up without/ have not experienced a positive female role model
We need Cat to highlight that knowledge is a good thing to have and that education is valuable and not 'nerdy'
We need Cat to speak out on behalf of those whose voices can't always be heard
We need Cat to shake up the staus quo and challenge ideas that have too long just simply been accepted without a challenge or even questioned
We need Cat as an example to show how it's okay to think for yourself and not follow the crowd all the time

We need Cat because we need women in superhero comics not portrayed like they're from a teenager's exagerated sexual fantasy.
We need Cat because women don't need men to come and save their ass.
We need Cat because hell yeah, smart is a super power. And it belongs to women as it belongs to men.
We need Cat because smart doesn't mean socially disabled.
And for everything better said before than anything I can come up with ^^

We need Cat because we still live in a world where International Women's Day is needed.

We need Cat because we not only live in a world where International Women's Day is still needed but also because it is not taken seriously in the media who produce token and over-simplified articles such as this www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-21661744 rather than really taking seriously the issues at hand

Isn't it! It does make me think we should make MSCSI ones that look similar but have the girlie ones as being the hero.

Oh the comments to that article!
ETA: I think the Everyday Sexism project is brilliant by the way. Hard reading at times but much needed.

Because apparently trying to promote equality makes one a fanatic www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22674928 - skip down to the last couple of paragrpahs for some comments from someone who writes for FHM describing an attmept to get 'lad's mags' banned under the Equality Act (2010) as fanatical and sinister
