I went to the Cardiff Comic Expo today with a friend and her two boys, and had a really good time! It was their first time at a con of any sort so when they saw Darth Vader and a load of stormtroopers outside they were really excited, and they got really into it as we walked around. They've already asked if they can go back to the Cardiff Expo in October, and they want to cosplay at London Film and Comic Con in July. Nothing like infecting others encouraging a love of comics.
We arrived just after 11 and I wanted to go to the women in comics panel at 11.15 so we headed upstairs straight away. The panel was interesting, though I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of what was said by the panellists. I was tweeting a lot of it so I'll put that into a different thread as I'd really like to see what everyone else thinks, but it was thought provoking if nothing else.
We wandered around the stalls and stuff for a while after that. I bought an Exterminate card and had a chat with the artist for a bit, picked up a couple of dark fantasy Wizard of Oz books and the first six issues of the Vampire Free Style comic (which has a cute little black cat in it who looks like Milo). I was really tempted to buy some of the Druids Welsh language comics but I didn't in the end. Of course I'm kicking myself now that I'm home, but I know I can get hold of them from the publisher another time. The guy on the stall was having chat with a customer about Welsh language comics though (something I'm really interested in) and the customer was saying how they've actually been great for helping people - especially women - to learn Welsh. They're more historical fiction rather than action comics and so that, he thought, made a difference. I wish I'd joined in the conversation now but they seemed either to know each other or had been talking for a while so I didn't feel like I could just jump in.
After that I wandered round some more and picked up a gorgeous print by Canadian artist Camilla Derrico. There were two pieces I really liked and I was torn as to which one I wanted, but I ended up getting this one. I'm really glad I did.
I also chatted to the artist behind Destiny Blue and ended up buying this print:
which she kindly signed for me.
There was so much more artwork that I would've loved to have got but just couldn't afford! I also didn't get a chance to speak to Mike Collins which I was gutted about.
I did say I was only going today, but I'm really tempted to go back again tomorrow. There are two panels I'd like to go to, one on Working on Creator-Owned Properties vs Working in Mainstream Publishing and the other on How to get Ahead in Small Press / Self Publishing. I can't really afford to though, especially not when I'm going to want to buy more art while I'm there!
I really enjoyed the day though, and I'm looking forward to getting into the comics I bought.
