Hello everyone! I'm Riven, but most people know me as the Wordie Birdie, because I'm covered in bird tattoos, and I know how to make the words goodly....
I pretty much grew up in my local video shop, and I love sharing all the odd, overlooked little gems in my own little library, so drop by here whenever you're stuck for something to watch, and I'll rustle something up for you x

The trouble is I think about these too much! In no particular order (and no doubt missing really obvious ones I'll kick myself for):
The X-Files: Fight The Future Love Actually Little Miss Sunshine The Day After Tomorrow The Full Monty

Okay, if we imagine a gun is being held to my head, then... ~1. A Clockwork Orange ~1. Wall-E 3. The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari 4. Blood on Satan's Claw 5. Irreversible ...there are so many though. That's like asking to choose between children! How about your top 5, Riven?

If I answered next week, the bottom two might change (do love them though) but those top three have been my top three for a very, very long time.
It's a snapshot into your taste, not an absolute definitive list. I couldn't make a definitive list with less than 20.
Nia, I'd NEVER be able to sit through Irreversible again. I admire it greatly, but it was too much of an ordeal. Amazing that a film can be that powerful still, even after we've all been desensitized.
Beth, I KNEW Fight The Future would be on there; how did you feel about the second one?

Quick Top 5's are always so difficult, I feel like I'm leaving something out...but here goes
1 - Pulp Fiction 2 - The Breakfast Club 3 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show 4 - She's All That 5 - Labyrinth
I would say that Alice in Wonderland ( the Disney Cartoon) and the Wizard of Oz could possibly break in to my top 5

<3 Rocky and Labyrinth!
Riven, I don't dislike the second film, though I prefer the first. I think the problem people had was they were expecting aliens but Carter had said all along the second film wouldn't be mytharc. That and it was released the same summer as Dark Knight and it was never going to be a summer blockbuster film. In many ways it actually reminds me of the early season episodes-it's got a certain feel to it that I think was influenced by filming in Vancouver again. Plus IWTB was how I met Nia so it left me with some amazing friends.

Amazing that a film can be that powerful still, even after we've all been desensitized. I love all of Noe's work, but I do think Irreversible remains my favourite. I totally understand what you mean about not being to sit through it agian...I've seen it about six times though (twice in a week, once!). It's just such a brilliant piece of filmmaking, regardless of content; but then on top of that the content is powerful as hell.

Tink - I got to see Pulp Fiction screened open air once. It was an amazing afternoon, everyone chilling out on the grass, just enjoying this iconic piece of cinema. People were reverently quiet throughout, except SOMEHOW we all, wordlessly co-ordinated at one perfect moment, and shouted in unison BRING OUT THE GIMP. Amazing day.
Beth, I think I was expecting a standalone Season 3-type deal, and was sorely disappointed. Took me two attempts to watch the whole film, and I honestly hated it. I struggle to watch any further than Season 7 though, I feel like a dirty part-timer now...
Nia, it is, I agree; I think the fact that I had such a strong reaction is testament to Noe's skills. Did you know that Refn and Gosling consulted him for the elevator scene in Drive?

I'd love to get to something like that, people who appreciate film all having an evening out. Perhaps something worth proposing to our local council

Oh dear, this is hard, as I've got a list of Top Five for enjoyment and Top Five for overall craft and Top Five for artistry (thanks, Film Studies minor, ruining me for life), so we'll go with the second: - Silence of the Lambs - Do the Right Thing - O Brother, Where Art Thou? - Kill Bill vol. 1 - Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World

you can give us the other two lists if you like?
I ADORE O Brother, Where Art Thou?
I've had to explain to so many people why I'm sat giggling to myself and saying 'we thort you wuz a TOOOADD' just because it's stuck in my head that moment. Love the Coens.

I actually still haven't seen Drive (I KNOW - I even have the DVD) - but I'm fairly sure Noe and Refn know each other (though I'm not sure what I'm basing that on), so it's pretty plausible!
