We've had a couple of discussion here about Urbanite having a pseudo-identity and that there seems to be more to him than meets the I, but I was considering whether Cat has a pseudo-identity.
Let me clarify. By this I don't mean her superhero identity as such(although of course that is a pseudo-identity) but being female. Cat may not act like the stereotypical woman (in fact MSCSI attempts to subvert such tropes) but does live in a world, as we do, where women are expected to act in a certain way.
In this sense she can be said to have this pseudo-identity thrust upon her. Stereotypical femininity is not what Cat is or adheres to but femininity is constructed in such a way that society blindly perceives her in this way even though she appears otherwise. I think we get this in the 1st issue when Cat attends a meeting and the man there assumes she's a secretary or something.
Could we consider construct of masculinity and femininity to be pseudo-identities. Ones we don't necessarily want but are thrust upon us. Ones we don't necessarily act out but are seen to act out all the same. A cultural lens which blocks out anything to the contrary- maybe the ultimate secret identity?
Could this ever be used to an advantage?
I'm rambling here and I'm not sure if this makes any sense (my neighbor is blasting his music at the moment which is making it hard to concentrate!) but what does anyone else think?
