I'm surprised we haven't got a post up about this yet, so I thought I'd make one. Big news in comics this week is that DC is introducing the first transgender character in mainstream comics. There's more info at www.wired.com/underwire/2013/04/transgender-dc-comics-batgirl/ but essentially in Batgirl #19 (written by Gail Simone) the character Alysia Yeoh will reveal that she is a transwoman in a conversation with her roommate, Barbara Gordon. What do we all think of this?

This is really quite interesting. We've spoken before about genuine attmepts to include marginalised voices vs. token gestures so it will be interesting to see how this will be developed.
Do you think the reception will be postive or negative?
Also, I had no idea that LGBT characters were once banned from comic books. But I liked the comment about not keeping comics in 1950s mentality forever- very important to change with the times as of course comics can influence how we percieve the world.

Yeah, for what it's worth I do think this is a genuine attempt rather than a token gesture. I really hope that it will be received positively as well. I don't know enough about the Batgirl comics to say how I think it'll go (Will would have more of an idea than me I think) but so far it seems to be viewed as a good thing. At least among the comics fans I follow on Twitter...
Comics can play an important role in how we perceive the world so I am glad that more is being done to bring comics out of that sort of 1950s mentality.

I hadn't hear about this before, what great news! I think having a trans character is a really important development for comics. I look forward to seeing how they do it.
I had no idea LGBT characters were banned from comics before.
